C.1925, New Haven WINSOME banjo clock, Westminster chime, mahogany case. -
Attributed to Aaron Willard, Jr., Roxbury, Massachusetts, patent timepiece or "banjo" clock with hermometer, the mahogany case with brass eagle finial over the unmarked, painted iron roman numeral dial, held in place by three "L" shaped screws, superb original steel barbed hands, the cross-banded throat section with reverse-painted glass signed "Willard's Patent" in the lower cartouche, red and green decoration frames the thermometer with graduations from minus 40 to 260 degrees Fahrenheit and notations from "Extreme Cold" to "Water Boils", the lower glass framed with cross-banding also marked "Willard's Patent" in a banner above the pendulum aperture, red, green, gold and mustard decoration complete a geometric design bordered in white, eight day timepiece with t bridge suspension, recoil escapement, alternate train layout, holes remaining for through bolts for movement attachment to the case, all powered by a lead weight and regulated by a pendulum. -

E. Howard & Co. Boston, Mass., "No. 95 Banjo Clock", the special order mahogany case surmounted by a cast brass eagle finial, roman numeral dial signed "E. Howard & Co./ Boston", slightly convex frames with two lines of segmented dark and light inlays frame the superb reverse-paintings on glass, the lower depicting the patriotic scene of American and British war ships (presumably the Constitution and the Guerriere) both flying their national colors set within Patriotic iconography including a draped American flag, canons, an anchor and a central eagle perched on a Federal shield for pendulum viewing all framed by gilt flaming columns, the waist glass flanked by brass side ornaments depicts a floral basket, cross-hatched cartouche and finial with draperies and floral spray, below a carved pedestal with balls and acorn drop, eight day brass weight powered movement stamped "E. Howard & Co./Boston" with maintaining power, Geneva stop and recoil escapement with front plate viewing ports, all powered by a lead weight and regulated by a brass faced pendulum bob and flat wooden rod. -

Attributed to Aaron Willard, Jr., Roxbury, Massachusetts, mahogany patent timepiece or "banjo" clock, iron roman numeral dial, brass bezel, side ornaments flanking the waist section, waist and box with cross banded frames for the reverse-painted glasses, the waist with gold floral and leafage decoration framing a central classical urn with climbing vine, the lower glass marked "Patent" within a centered rectangular panel with central aperture for pendulum viewing and leafage tied with a ribbon against a green ground, eight day timepiece movement with t bridge suspension, step train, and through bolts for case attachment, all powered by a period lead weight, regulated by a pendulum with steel rod and brass-faced bob, and period winding key. Provenance: J.T. Vogdes, Philadelphia as indicated by a printed label on the backboard of the case. -

Willard's Patent" and "E Pluribus Unum" shown on banners held by the American eagle and Lady Liberty, with staff and the Liberty Cap, all leaning on the remains of the globe with latitude and longitude markings and with aperture for viewing pendulum, eight day timepiece movement with t bridge suspension, step train, and recoil escapement, powered by a lead weight and regulated by a brass faced pendulum bob and steel rod, the back side of the back plate is inscribed "A Turner/ No. 27 1809". -

Howard & Co./Boston", brass bezel, flat frames for the reverse-paintings on glass, the lower depicting and marked "Constitution--Guerriere" in a blazing War of 1812 battle, a gilt patriotic eagle and banner tops the pendulum viewing port, all enclosed in a red, black and gilt oval cartouche with leafage surround and spandrels, the waist flanked with unusual brass side ornaments features repeating elements and colors set in an oblong border, the base carries a carved pedestal with acorn drop, eight day nickel plate movement marked "E. Howard & Co./Boston" with recoil escapement and viewing ports, maintaining power, and Geneva stop all powered by a lead weight and regulated by a brass faced pendulum bob with flat wooden rod and tie-down. -

Unknown, Massachusetts, 8 day, weight brass movement patent or banjo timepiece. It is difficult to ascertain if this is a period clock or it was made from old parts. In any event it is an attractive timepiece. -
