Description

case very dirty, but appears to retain its original gilding, slight gap between base molding and upper part of base, can be closed by loosening nuts and realigning the components, marble with minor flakes and chips, the small casting representing part of Andromache's puddled dress on the case top missing, dial with a few minor scratches and a very faint hairline at the center, movement ticks and strikes, old conversion from silk thread suspension to steel, back cock appears to be correct, pendulum replaced. This clock is nearly identical to a number of examples in public and private collections, including one in the Russian Royal Collection, Catherine wing of the palace of Montplaisir at Petrodvorest, another, formerly intended for the Grand Salon of the Petit Trianon apartments is pictured in Dupuy- Bayalet "Pendules du Mobilier National 1800- 1870", page 111, plate 47, and a third is at the headquarters of the Ministry of Finance in Paris, and illustrated in Dumonthier "Les Bronzes du Mobilier National, Pendules et Cartels", plate 37. Christie's New York sold a nearly identical example with a bronze base in 2014, sale 2884, 10/21/2014, lot 288, which realized $30,000.00.
