Description
ca 1825-40 with 8-day brass time and strike spring-driven movement marked Robert/A. Paris in kidney-shaped stamp, an unusual movement with circular brass plates, painted dial set in oil on canvas landscape with Italianate building and shepherd, sheep, goats and horse in foreground. The wooden frame/case for the movement is signed in period ink O. Millan with title Vue puile an cruitonn? The oil on canvas is mounted in original gold paint of a gilt gesso frame, 33.25" x 39.75" with original wrought iron hanger on back. The music box movement is a brass cylinder with steel comb having 70 notes. The mechanism is controlled by two arms with brass knobs that extend through the bottom of the case, one on left to turn it on and off and right to adjust speed. Includes key and pendulum. Condition report Two small patches in the canvas, lower right corner in foliage area; frame as described, both clock and musical mechanism are currently working, but we do not guarantee working order of mechanical devices such as these.
