Description
Condition: the self wound movement is of Seth Thomas design, with an ST iron movement holder that is in turn mounted to a strap iron superstructure. All of the work is good quality, and we suspect the clock was a special order, perhaps for a mortuary or similar reception area where chimes were required with no attention from the owner. The dial itself is marked "Made in Germany" and was probably bought to fit the case and adapted to the movement; it was never on another clock, nor drilled for winding. The case is virtually all of solid oak and is extremely heavy. Glass on sides and lower door are all heavy beveled plate. The unusual pendulum consists of 4 smaller sealed steel vials containing mercury, the rating nut in the center, rather than top or bottom. Note there are NO tubes, and no plungers for the chime solenoid. Movement ticks with finger pressure on train, but we could not get the solenoid to click over and wind the spring. Our estimate is based on the value of the case, which is large enough to accommodate the largest chime movement of the day. Ht 93" [236cm]
