Description
We judge this clock to have been made in old China during the days of the QING DYNASTY, (ca 1911)--just prior to the establishment of the Republic Of China. We consulted with an acquaintance who recently arrived in this country from Shanghai and who verified that the "Characters" on the face of the clock are definitely Chinese and predate the Maoist takeover. They list the name of the clock making company. The very fine clockwork mechanism with an hourly chime features a self-correcting, brass, eight-day movement of the best quality. Also included is a nickel-plated pendulum 'bob' and a hand-painted dial (face) with Arabic numerals... including the maker's name in Chinese "characters". By self-correcting, we mean that if the hands were turned to another time setting, the strike or chime would correct itself to sound the proper number of tones. The charming three-dimensional bas-relief metallic DRAGON DESIGN surrounding the door frame completes the elegance of this unusual and exceptional Oriental clock. NOTE: Because we have re-wound the clock every week- along with all our other clocks, we've not determined if it might have MORE than a one week (eight-day) mechanism. The fact that it only requires a few turns of the winding key to rewind it fully, leads us to speculate that it might be a 14-day (or longer) movement. I wouldn't be surprised if it might run for as long as than two weeks per winding. But, we list it as an eight-day clock at this time. Height: 17 in. (43.18 cm) Depth: 6 in. (15.24 cm) Width: 10 in.
