Description
This big mahogany case is 97 inches high, 23 inches wide, and generally in near perfect condition. The large middle finial in not in the picture because of the height of the room. The 3 finials, weights, pendulum, and everything, is original to the clock. This is only the 3rd Seth Thomas tall clock we have offered in our auctions. These big clocks are usually sold privately or handed down in the family. Seth Thomas was the first company to produce a complete Hall Clock that was made entirely in America. Herschede, Colonial, and others made cases earlier than Seth Thomas but bought their movements in Europe. The movement is powered by 3 large brass weights, chimes Westminster on 4 cup bells, and strikes the hours on a large Cathedral bell (gong). The dial is silvered brass. The center section is polished, outer section with a dull finish, gilt ornamental lines. It is 15 inches high, 11.5 inches wide, has a lithographed moon disc. It has been in our collection for some time, and has been running steadily. Some Seth Thomas Hall Clocks are pictured in Ly-Seth Thomas, or the Seth Thomas Trade catalogue, 1909-1910.
