Description
The original painted metal dial is signed, "Warrented by J. Chadwick". Alone or with his brother-in-law, Benjamin Morrill, he developed a mirror clock now known as the New Hampshire mirror clock. His movement was also used by Morrill, who later changed or improved it, to the "wheelbarrow" movement. Both their shops were in Boscawen, a few miles north of Concord. Other shops began making mirror clocks in NH and they all have several common characteristics. Dimensions of the wood case are 30 inches high, 14 inches wide. The case is completely original including the finish, gold leaf and paint on the 4 door columns, gold leaf cross bar between the glasses, and detailed brass medallions at each door corner. It even has the original pin lock for the door. The replacement upper glass was copied from the broken original, which we have. The mirror is original, as are the steel cut hands. There is no label but it has many repair notices and notes or testimonials from earlier owners, including dates to the early 1800's. The case interior and backboard are well oxidized and without repairs. The original Chadwick movement is in good running order, with original bob, rod, and weight. Seldom do we see these early, weighted, mirror clocks for sale.
