Description
It plays Whittington chimes on the quarters (8-16-24-32) on a nest of 8 bells, and strikes the hour on a coiled gong. The main movement is basically a French solid plate, square movement, containing the time and strike trains. Attached to the bottom of the main movement is the chime movement. The chime movement is wound via the dial center arbor thru a spur gear arrangement. The nested 8 bell stand is attached to the bottom of the chime movement. It is not auto-correcting but it is interlocked to allow hour striking only after a 32 note chime sequence. The upper movement has a trade mark, but was not to be found in my trademark books. It is an engraving of a "scythe, hourglass, and a bundle of wheat". The movement-bell package is about 10 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide, very heavy, very well made, and is working properly. The very large, very heavy case is primarily marble, some bronze plates in the back, bronze Roman Frieze at top, bronze fluted full columns, capitals and bases, and a round bronze trim around the base. Beautiful designs etched in the marble highlighted with gold and silver paint. The very thick silver dial has painted numerals and is signed, "Woodroffe. Stockton". The case is 21 inches high, 17 inches wide, and 8' deep. There is a heavy bronze bezel and sash with thick beveled glass. A presentation plaque to a retiring member of the Fox Hound Club, dated 1886.
