Description

14-1/2 inch bezel is gesso on wood, painted black and has false grained rings. The gesso which usually chips pretty bad, especially if it this old, appears to have held remarkably well. The wood case box is painted black, has a trap door at the bottom to access the pendulum, and also has a hook to hold the bezel. The glass in the bezel is held with a large brass ring. 9 inch painted metal dial is near perfect. Hands and pendulum are also original. The clock has a large iron plate, vertical post, Comtoise movement. 8 day movement strikes hours and half hours on a wire gong, and then strikes again 2-3 minutes after the hour. When new, these movements carried a 25 year guarantee. That tells me the maker built a pretty solid movement and didnÕt worry about it going bad. Other than a light amount of wear on the bezel, this clock is aspristine as I have seen in a 100+ year old Morbier. The clock is running andstriking. Even the bezel prop arm is still there and functional. See Ehrhardt, Book 3, page 89, for several similar cartels.
