Description

The movement is marked "Planchon, Palais Royal". Mathieu Planchon was a maker of great repute. He wrote several books on clockmaking and worked from 1865 to 1920. He had an establishment at the "Palais Royal" from 1890, and reproduced many famous and expensive clocks so that they could be enjoyed by the middle class. This large gilt brass clock is a rather interesting piece. The engraved decoration looks like sixteenth century design. On each side of the case is an engraved picture of a woman dressed in a sixteenth century costume. The top of the case looks like an early French fort with cannon. The steel hands are original. Height 24Ó $1,000-$1,500
