Description

Dimensions:26" in height by 15" wide. Maker/Mfgr./Author/Artist:Black Forest wood carver-unsigned. Condition:Excellent with some restoration and new finish. Circa:CA 1870 Materials:Linden wood case; brass movement, original bone pinned numerals and hands. Description:Hand carved Black Forest cuckoo has a wealth of leaf and vine detailing including three large birds on the case- the one standing atop the crown and the other two in the nest at the bottom of the ornamentation. Some restoration has been done to reglue the leaves. This is not visible from the front of the clock...and to most persons, not visible from the back either. Notice that the leaf design differs on the lower right and left sides. The leaves and branches are not a mirror image. This is often found on hand carved cuckoo clocks from the Black Forest due to the fact that the carvings were done individually and each clock therefore differed somewhat from any of the others. Very old restoration to the exceptionally detailed vines and leaves that are found only on the much older cuckoo clocks from the Black Forest....when the carvers were at their best. The case has had a coat of varnish which brought the wood to a state of like-new sheen. The brass movement is clean and works perfectly. The cuckoo sings his song with a deep and clear sound-the sign of a healthy bellows in the movement. As he cuckoos (once on the half-hour and the full number on each hour), he bows his head, opens and closes his beak and flaps his wings.
