Description

Musical month-going picture clock with seven tunes, from the estate of the Empress Eugenie of France (wife of Napoleon III). The picture is based on a 1871 contemporary cartoon showing France (la Belle Francaise?) surrendering to Austria, and was probably commissioned by the Empress when she fled to Britain, where she lived for the remainder of her life. In original condition (the painting - not the Empress!) approx 4'x 3', in full working order, with some original documents, including an original of the journal in which the cartoon appeared - should be in a French museum, perhaps! Movements, French/Swiss Painting, ? c187?. A real piece of history!
