Chelsea Clock Company

Chelsea Clock Company

The Chelsea Clock Company was founded in 1897 in Chelsea, Massachusetts, and quickly established itself as one of America’s premier manufacturers of high-quality clocks. Unlike the mass-market Connecticut clock factories, Chelsea positioned itself as a maker of precision timepieces for discerning customers.

Chelsea became particularly well known for its ship’s bell clocks, which strike the traditional nautical bell sequence and were adopted as standard equipment by the United States Navy and merchant marine. The company also supplied clocks to the U.S. Army and produced instrument panel clocks for early aircraft.

The company’s product line included a wide variety of brass ship’s clocks, barometers, and desk clocks, many housed in polished brass or chrome cases of elegant simplicity. Chelsea clocks were also popular as presentation pieces, and many were engraved and given as corporate gifts or retirement awards.

Chelsea clocks are identified by serial numbers stamped on the movement, which can be used to date them precisely. The company has maintained its commitment to quality manufacturing throughout its history and continues to produce clocks in Chelsea, Massachusetts to this day, making it one of the oldest continuously operating clock manufacturers in the United States.

Antique Chelsea clocks — particularly early ship’s bell clocks and World War II-era military timepieces — are actively collected and command strong prices at auction.
